The joy of stats

I like the football league standings. Even non football fans adopt a team for whatever reason and follow it( my personal preferences are Crewe Alexandra and Farnborough FC), i think it’s the variety of computations that fascinate us poor devotees to the  league tables.  Of course you have to take into account many factors, form of the team, then the home and away form, goal difference etc (and my personal favourite, what if we win the next three and everyone else above us loses).

Everyone loves a stat. Stats are everywhere, the news has stats, then they have people arguing that that the stats aren’t accurate or have been misread, it seems a wonder that we can getany accurate information. Being easily digestible not to mention good to impress people at the pub with, i will always be a fan and also i will always be good at quizzes because of my love. Yes it is love, uncomplicated, simple and inexpensive. Judge me how you will but deep down i know at least 53% of people reading this will agree even if they don’t say so.

In memoriam

Yesterday i was watching Football Focus and the tribute they paid to the 96 fans who lost their lives that tragic day in the Hillsborough disaster.
While i need not go into this well documented tragedy again, the minute’s silence before the match got me thinking of the varied ways people around the world conduct themselves. Some have a minute’s applauding or cheering but for me the minute’s silence is the most poignant.
It’s come to my attentions though that the minute’s silence…
